Uniting a Diverse Workforce and DEI‑Focused Organizations Across America

By Ruksana Hussain

City Career Fair bolsters nationwide diversity recruitment with annual events.

Celebrating 25 years in 2025, the Annual Diversity Employment Day Career Fair and Roundtable brings together employers valuing diversity, equity and inclusion in their workforce, and skilled candidates from the multicultural and diverse communities across the United States, including but not limited to individuals with disabilities, women, LGBTQ+, veterans, and more, fueled by the conviction that organizations want to build a workforce reflecting the communities they serve. Hosted by City Career Fair, the 30-city strong, and counting, yearly event is one that both companies and candidates benefit from immensely.

“In many cases, our career fair is the only opportunity that employers have, to meet with certain community-based and professional groups from the multicultural and diverse communities. We feel honored to be able to provide this access to employers,” says Neal Morrison, Diversity Outreach Director. “Diversity is about inclusion, not exclusion. And that means all of us, in it, together. That’s one of the points that I make clear at our career fairs to the employers, that if they donʼt take advantage of the opportunities to build a workforce now that reflects all the communities they serve, theyʼre going to be at a distinct business disadvantage immediately because the workforce is changing.”

Aside from providing a venue for prospective employers and employees to connect, the roundtables at the career fairs facilitate discussion among employers, government agencies and other professional and community organizations on topics related to diversity and inclusion, addressing issues in the workplace, employment initiatives, and more. Members from organizations such as Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs also meet with employers to share insights on their initiatives.

Many professional and community-based organizations also participate, affording them an opportunity to be represented before employers, sometimes resulting in partnerships they’d never imagined. Better yet, City Career Fair produces a digital guide for each event which features several of the employers participating in these fairs and has proved to be a resource with an unlimited shelf life for outreach months after an event has been hosted.

City Career Fair has been recognized by mayors and governors nationally, received proclamations and commendations from city councils and government chambers, and is credited as an established industry event but does not depend upon donations or any one government agency for funding. In fact, it’s the employers who pay a participation fee that support the event and have done so for 24 years, proving the success of and very need for such a venture.

For candidates seeking employment, City Career Fair provides resume review services, personal branding workshops, and even partners with some workforce centers to coordinate training that will prep their candidates for the career fair. Collaborations have seen cities, chambers of commerce, industries and media partners working in unison to garner a greater reach within the communities covered and catered to.

“We put together a jambalaya of our efforts and affiliations by collaborating and it ends up benefiting the candidates in a tremendous way,” says Morrison. “We share with candidates insights about how to maximize on their investment in attending our Diversity Employment Day Career Fair.”

Though recruiting events have primarily been in-person, the pandemic challenged City Career Fair with hosting virtual editions, a platform they’ve since perfected and now utilize more to host industry-specific fairs, enabling them to provide clients with a professional level stream of candidates nationwide. Morrison states this has especially found favor with companies in the high-tech arena, who appreciate the convenience and accessibility the system allows. Other industries taking advantage of the virtual version include healthcare, allied and nursing; law enforcement and veterans; high tech and engineering; education and teaching, and more slated for the next few editions.

Thousands of nationally recognized corporate, nonprofit and government clients have turned to City Career Fair for hiring qualified talent and thousands more of candidates have attended these events to find rewarding careers and companies that value their contributions. Boeing, Kaiser Permanente, Bank of America and agencies such as the CIA, FBI and IRS have all participated or are participating in the career fairs.

“Thereʼs not any major employer that hasnʼt benefited from participating in our event multiple times. The key is multiple times,” points Morrison, which only further substantiates the quality of this crucial service presented to and valued by employers and employees.
