A New Way To Do It

By Kathy David

The future is in cloud computing

There is a new way to do information technology (IT). As technology continues to evolve and change at a rapid pace, it pushes both the boundaries of both business and traditional IT. In turn, IT infrastructures, operations and organizations must also develop to grow.

According to a 2015 Hewlett Packard report on infrastructure imperatives, 81 percent of IT managers and 84 percent of line of business decision-makers no longer view IT as just a cost center but now see it as a critical influence to changing the direction of the company.

Cloud computing is a significant component of this change, and should be considered to address and improve the inefficiencies of a business’ service delivery or operations. Integrating such a network can also help with the challenge of obtaining highly secured, reliable and innovative services despite resource limitations.

The future of IT lies in these five major factors:

1 AGILITY

Today’s cloud technologies are flexible and scalable. The cloud is highly customizable and able to adapt a private or hybrid model to meet the needs of businesses. Its abilities are easily scalable or retractable to fit an organization. The traditional approach to starting or changing IT projects can take years to build according to an organization’s requirements for new technology services, and departments will also need to take on additional resources for months to fulfill the traditional-based solution. With the cloud, the service is usually more responsive, and other resources can be quickly added even during urgent needs.

2 BIG DATA AND ANALYTICS

Big Data helps organizations generate insights and achieve better business outcomes. With data analytics, management is able to monitor and understand the behavior participants to tailor the experience and provide solutions for each department’s needs. Doing so helps individual units make better financial decisions and allocate the right amount of resources where needed.

3 SECURITY & RECOVERY

When moving to the cloud, organizations must take caution and understand the technology aspects of a provider’s infrastructure. Security today is beyond just appliances and firewalls: Decision-makers must be mindful of the technical skills, processes and procedures to ensure the safety of their information and data.

With a trusted provider, certified security engineers should be readily available to support and manage security and recovery as part of the service offering. An organization’s financial resources can be saved on such backup and recovery solutions.

4 COMPLIANCE

Digitization is putting additional pressure on electronic data compliances and information security assurance requirements. When choosing a service or infrastructure provider, make sure their data centers are at the highest level of security, the company is audited by a third-party company and is capable of meeting all of your industry’s regulation requirements. Most cloud solutions are “compliance ready” or enable their clients to be compliant with regulations in their industry. This will help to maintain or improve an organization’s compliance plan.

5 MOBILITY

Mobility is a revolution that is expanding rapidly within the enterprise. Today’s workforce demands movement and ease of access to perform at the highest capacity possible. Employees want to be in control of the device they use to be most productive, and tend to judge enterprises by which services are mobile-enabled.

Cloud computing empowers employers to be more productive, flexible and responsive. Leveraging its technologies, such as hosted exchange, cloud file sharing and instant messaging, provides tools to connect the organization.

The benefits of cloud computing are advantageous to any enterprise. Since the cost to implement is usually lower than the traditional approach, it is easy to add resources, such as data recovery, data centralization, built-in security and compliance.

While the list of benefits is long, there are also potential downsides if not partnered with a capable provider. Consult with a trusted cloud service provider to get guidance and information about selecting the right cloud solutions and services for your business.
